MANSFIELD, Ohio — Exactly one week after Richland Source decided to adopt Tess from the Humane Society, she found a home.

John and Linda Brown, of Lexington, paid Tess a visit Thursday and fell in love with the beagle pup. But for Linda, it wasn’t the first time meeting her.

“I saw Tess in Relax one day when I was getting coffee,” she said. “I fell in love with her. We haven’t had a dog in a long time and my husband has been wanting a dog. So I went home and told him (John) about it.”

The retired couple, Linda, 68, and John, 71, owned a cocker spaniel before adopting Tess. The dog died of natural causes a few years ago.

After some years of traveling and putting children through college, the couple started thinking about welcoming a new addition to the family. Besides, their grandchildren would love it.

“Our decision was based on the fact that our daughter and son-in-law, and their family have been begging for a dog,” said Linda. “So we (her and John) kind of agreed that they would take care of her when we go on short trips.”

“I’m one of those pet owners that can’t (stand) the thought of having the dog in a crate with the vet when we’re away. I don’t like to do that. So we wanted to make sure we had backup for her.”

Linda said Tess will most likely keep her name.

“I know she’s not human but I feel like she’s going to keep her name. She has lots of adjustments to make. It’s the last thing I would want to do. She has enough adjustments,” said Linda.

Tess was adopted through the Richland County Humane Society’s Home for the Holidays program. Community members are encouraged to take home a pet for 30 days through the program to see if they would be willing to adopt the pet.
