Mansfield Senior's Marvin Parker scores a touchdown against West Holmes. The Senior is the All-Richland Source Defensive Player of the Year.

MANSFIELD, Ohio — It was late October of 2013 and Mansfield Senior had just clinched the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship with a win at Lexington.

The Tygers boasted a star-studded senior class, but on this night all coach Chioke Bradley wanted to talk about was the play of a relatively unknown sophomore on the defensive line.

Linebacker-turned-defensive tackle Marvin Parker had two second-half sacks and recovered a pooch kick that led to a Senior High touchdown.

“‘You’ve got to remember, he’s just a pup,” Bradley raved. “He’s going to be a good one.”

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior made good on his coach’s prediction this fall. The Richland Source Defensive Player of the Year, Parker had a whopping 19 tackles for loss, including seven sacks. He had 75 total tackles, including 44 solo stops, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles.

Parker led the Tygers to a share of the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship and was selected the OCC Defensive Player of the Year. He was an All-Northwest District first team selection in Division II and will likely earn a spot on the All-Ohio team, released this week.

“He was the heart and soul of our defense,” Bradley said. “He is a student of the game. He has a high football IQ.”

With Parker leading the charge, the Tygers limited opponents to 153.1 yards rushing and 225.2 total yards per game this fall. Senior High advanced to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons before falling to Massillon Perry in the opening round of the Division II, Region 5 playoffs earlier this month. Perry will play for a state title this weekend.

Joining Parker at linebacker on the All-Richland Source defense are Lucas’ Ryan Cook and Shelby’s Dylan Shaffer.

A senior, Cook led the Cubs with 100 tackles during the regular season. The All-Northwest District first team selection in Division VII was the centerpiece of a Lucas defense that limited opponents to 9.9 points a game during the regular season and pitched three shutouts. The Cubs advanced to the Region 24 championship game.

Shaffer had 102 tackles for the Whippets, who challenged for the Northern Ohio League championship this fall. The senior was an All-Northwest District first team pick in Division IV.

Mansfield Senior’s Mario Young made a huge impact in his first season of football. The All-Ohio basketball player had an area-best 10 sacks as a defensive end. He was an OCC first team pick and an All-Northwest District first-teamer in Division II.

Lucas senior Vince Brock was a stalwart along the line of scrimmage. He was selected to the All-Northwest District first team in Division VII.

Galion’s Isaiah Davis had nine sacks this fall, helping the Tigers reach the postseason. The senior was a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Red Division first team selection and an All-Northwest District first-teamer in Division V.

Mansfield Senior’s Jacquille Fletcher was invaluable as a run-stuffer this fall. The senior had 31 tackles, including four tackles for loss, and was an OCC second-team pick.

Madison’s Braydon Adams earned a spot on the OCC first team and was an All-Northwest District second-team pick in Division III. The senior had 64 tacles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Lexington’s Tony Gerrell leads the All-Richland Source secondary after intercepting an area-high eight passes this fall. The sticky-fingered junior was an All-Northwest District first-team choice in Division III and an OCC second-teamer.

Gerrell is joined in the defensive backfield by Lex teammate Cade Stover. The 6-foot-4 freshman led the area with 118 tackles and was an All-Northwest District second-team selection.

Ontario’s Alex Vredenburgh was the quarterback of the Warriors’ offense, but was every bit as valuable in the secondary. The senior had three interceptions and was selected to the All-Northwest District first team as a defensive back.

Lucas sophomore Jackson Hauger picked off four passes during the regular season and had a critical interception in the Cubs’ regional semifinal win over Tiffin Calvert.

Galion’s Colton Moore had five interceptions during the regular season, earning a spot on the MOAC Red Division first team. The senior was selected to the All-Northwest District first team in Division V.

Lucas’ Rueben Luna is best known for his work at quarterback, but the senior was perhaps the area’s best punter. Luna was selected to the All-Northwest District first team as a kicker.

Lexington’s Hunter Biddle was one of the fastest players in the area. His breakaway speed would suit him well as the All-Richland Source punt returner. The junior was an OCC first team pick and an All-Northwest District second-teamer after rushing for 1,085 yards.
