MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Mansfield City School District continues their search for a new treasurer. Board president Renda Cline says she expects a decision will be coming “soon.”
The Mansfield district began their search last May when they announced the upcoming retirement of the current treasurer, Rosetta Stephens, effective Sept 1. Earlier this month an application for the fiscal position was withdrawn.
Board members went into executive session Tuesday night at the end of their regular meeting to continue discussions.
Cline said they are searching for a candidate that “understands the urban school district” environment. She noted that their treasurer’s position requires an ability to navigate the many grant programs utilized by the district.
During the regular meeting, 9-year-old Santana Saavedra made a presentation to board members. With the poise of a seasoned public speaker, Santana introduced the video made by Mansfield City Schools, urging parents to read to their children. Santana is one of several local students featured in the video that is available on YouTube.
Filmed at Woodland Elementary, the video encourages parents to help their children succeed in school by reading to them 20 minutes daily. Recent research is quoted in the video, stating that “one out of six students not reading at grade level by the third grade” will be unlikely to graduate.
Steve Rizzo explained that the video was made possible through a grant. Tiffin school district discovered the video online and received permission to use it for advocating reading at home.
Later in the meeting, Cliff Crose questioned Superintendent Brian Garverick about the disposition of three closed school buildings. The board member asked about the upkeep and liability costs at Newman and Springmill Elementary, along with Simpson Middle School.
When Garverick confirmed the possibility of demolishing Newman, Crose asked if it would be more cost effective to auction the building. Crose asked why Newman is still being heated in the winter season. Garverick said the boilers were being kept in operation due to plans to salvage the boilers in the future.
