MANSFIELD, Ohio —Roofing, water pipes, and new entrances were projects the Madison schools’ board of education discussed during their regular board meeting Wednesday. The board is also preparing for the new school year, including filling the vacated positions od 13 staff members.
“There’s some more roofing repairs and things like that we need to get done while the weather holds. And along with that, we’re just getting ready for a new school year,” said President Jeff Meyers. “Busy time, but we’re doing well.”
The board voted and approved a bid for the Madison South Elementary School roof replacement from Mid-Ohio Roofing Inc., a project that will cost the district $219,612.
The board also approved an $87,000 project that will include the installation of 1300 feet of piping to connect the high school’s building to the Madison Water District.
The board heard the Administrator’s Report, written and prepared by Supervisor Steve Crist. Superintendent Lee Kaple read the report that included completed projects and upcoming projects for the 2015-16 school year.
Crist’s report said the Maintenance Department was “able to install new entry designs at both Madison South and Mifflin Elementary schools.” Upgrades to schools completed during the 2014-15 school year included an alarm and employee entry system at Eastview and Mifflin schools.
During the 2015-16 school year, the Maintenance Department will install a new entry at Eastview.
Curriculum Director at the district’s Board Office Lynn Meister addressed the board on the Race to the Top program — a federal pilot program introduced by President Barack Obama’s administration in 2009 that offers schools funds to assess their students. Meister said the program has now officially ended.
“We’ve done very well with the program (Race to the Top), a lot because of how she (Meister) handled it. She’s done awesome for us,” said Meyers.
In other news, the board approved the resignations of 13 Madison School District staff members. Meyers said although a few staff members resigned, the district has filled 10 positions, leaving three positions still open.
“A couple of our teachers have found administrative positions and I wish them the very best with their careers as they continue on. Our principals are interviewing to fill those [teaching positions],” said Meyers.
The next meeting for the Madison board is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29 in the middle school.
