Merrill Tawse, science professor at Ashland University, will speak at the welcome reception for the 14th annual Mohican Wildlife Weekend on Friday, April 24, at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.

Want to experience the habitats of birds and bats, learn about fly-fishing, and more in the great outdoors? Then you’re bound to enjoy the 14th Annual Mohican Wildlife Weekend, April 24-26.

It’s a celebration of wildlife habitat, heritage, and natural history. Choose from eight program sites in Ashland & Richland counties that will offer workshops and demonstrations to interest beginners and experienced naturalists alike. It’s sure to be a fun and educational weekend for kids of all ages. Bring the whole family.

The theme will be “Face Your Wildest Fears,” with special programming related to this topic. Site offerings will include birding boat tours, photographing birds, nature crafts, wagon tours, bat & owl demonstrations, fly fishing demonstrations and much more. More than 30 sessions will be available.

Registration is not required for any of the programs. However, some programs have limited space and are first come, first served. Tickets must be purchased for the birding boat tours.  Geocaching is available at Byer’s Woods site only.

Be sure to attend the Welcome Reception from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday night, April 24 at Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase. Sign up to be included on our mailing list. Friday evening’s featured speaker will be Merrill Tawse,science professor at Ashland University. Tawse is a researcher, 30+ year outdoor educator, and bat expert.

Program sites are: Gorman Nature Center, Malabar Farm State Park, Mohican State Park & Lodge, Wolf Creek Grist Mill, Ohio Bird Sanctuary, Mohican Outdoor School, Byers Woods and Pleasant Hill Lake Park.

Participating organizations are: Ashland County Park District, Environmental Education Council of Ohio, Mohican Fly Fishers of Ohio and Mohican Trails Club.
