Richland Academy of the Arts will hold a fundraiser at Legend’s in Shelby from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, with proceeds benefiting a scholarship in memory of Shelby native Dick Barkdull.
The evening will feature live music performed by local musicians and friends of the Barkdull family. Wristbands will be available to purchase for $5 each and will get you 50 cents off every drink purchased at the bar. There will also be a 50/50 raffle throughout the evening.
Barkdull is being remembered by Richland Academy for his lifetime of dedication to promoting music opportunities for the youth in the area. This award is designed to help Shelby students who wish to participate in music programming at Richland Academy before graduating High School.
In addition Richland Academy is also offering two music scholarships to high school seniors. The first award is the J. Frederick “Fritz” Wolf Scholarship; a vocal scholarship in the amount of $350. This award will be given to one vocal student who is currently a high school senior and planning to participate in music in college. Applicants are required to sing one song from the Solo & Ensemble Senior High Vocal Solo Class A list.
The second award is the Dr. Thomas H. Croghan Scholarship for a jazz student (vocal or instrumental) in the amount of $300. This award will be given to one Jazz student who is currently a high school senior planning to participate in music in college this fall. Applicants are required to perform one jazz standard from memory (solo or with accompaniment) and to improvise 4 choruses of F, G, or C blues. Richland Academy will provide recorded rhythm tracks for the improvisation portion.
