Virgil G. Whims, 81, of Crestline, died Thursday, March 19, 2015 at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer. He went on to his Heavenly home surrounded by his daughters.
Virgil was born in Rittman, on July 28, 1933 to the late Lloyd J. and Sophia (Gwosden) Whims. He married Beth A. Deever on March 14, 1964 and she preceded him on December 9, 2014.
Virgil retired from Mansfield City School District in 1995 after a twenty-nine year career as a teacher, coach, and principal. Following his retirement, he became a Charter Captain on Lake Erie for twenty-five years and owned his own charter boat. Virgil enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling and playing cards. In 1960, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Ashland University, in 1971 a Master’s Degree from Akron University and in 1975 a Principal’s Certificate from Akron University. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Church, Mansfield, Mansfield Elks Lodge # 56 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #859, Crestline. Virgil served in the U.S. Navy from February 1952 to February 1956.
He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Cheryl and Pete Smith of Daphne, AL, Chris and Larry Dailey of Frostproof, FL, and Cathy and Mac McDonald of Theodore, AL, his five grandchildren: Katie and Robert Sweet, Laura Smith, Spencer and Kelly McDonald, Kyle Smith and Joshua and Cary Dailey, his two great-granddaughters: Zoe and Khloe Sweet, his two brothers: Terry & Mary Jo Whims of Rittman and Jerry and Judy Whims of Rittman, his two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Dan and Sharon Deever of Mansfield and Donna and Peter Hathaway of Weston, CT, his sister-in-law JoCilla (Whims) Frankenfield of Simpsonville, SC, his nephews: Mike and Tammy Whims and their family, Matt and Heather Whims and their family, Mark and Kay Whims and their family, Tim Whims and his family, Jamie and Laura Whims and their family, Scott Deever and family, John, Todd and Brent Hathaway and their families and his nieces: Lisa (Whims) and Jonathan Squires and their family and Amy (Deever) Kochera and her family and his four close friends Scott Jones, Greg Knackstedt, Angela McCarthy and Darcy Garrett.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years, Beth Whims, a brother Larry Whims, and niece, Kristen Whims.
The family will hold a graveside service at a later date in Ashland Cemetery.
