Zane Martin, 83, of Ontario, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 21, 2015, at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was born July 24, 1931, in Harold, Kentucky, to the late Charlie and Osa (Robinette) Martin. 

Zane graduated in 1950 from Betsy Lane High School in Harold, Kentucky, where his love of basketball and baseball began as he played on the high school team. He was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan his entire life. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Zane was always there when anyone needed him. He was a loving and involved father and grandfather and passed along his passion for Southern cooking to them. His quiet and gentle nature was apparent to all the birds and squirrels he fed throughout the years. Some squirrels even tugged at his pant leg for attention. 

Zane was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Amvets Post #26. He retired in 1993 as a millwright from General Motors after 33 1/2 years of service. 

He is survived by a daughter, Michelle Tanner; two granddaughters, Ashleigh (Josh) Coffey of West Jefferson, OH and Sara Tanner of London, OH; three great-grandchildren, Trey, Wyatt and Emmitt Coffey; two brothers, Glen (Shirlene) Martin of CA and Herbert (Carol) Martin of Hilliard, OH; his long-time companion, Lois Hughett of Mansfield and her children, Tim Hughett, Chris Hughett, Chris (Joe) Wentz and their grandson, Jax, Jeff Hughett. and the Rickster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Barnette Martin; son, Jeff Martin; sister, Mavis Wilson; and twin brother, Wayne Martin.

A Gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015, from 1-4 p.m. at the Amvets Post #26, 1100 W. Fourth St., Mansfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of Amvets Post #26. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family.

A thank you to Sonja Kries, and special thanks to Melissa Russell and Courtney Smith for being so good to Zane during his final stay at home.
