The Mansfield YMCA youth basketball program is in full swing. Young athletes are actively developing basketball skills, teamwork and friendships.
The YMCA’s youth basketball leagues are divided into three age groups, Rookies, Winners and Champions. The Rookies (first and second grade) learn the very basics of basketball. The Winners (third and fourth grade) are encouraged to develop their individual skills inside a team format. The Champions (fifth and sixth grade) is the oldest age group and most competitive league.
Coach Ernie Perkins has coached teams at the YMCA for three years. His children also play in two different age groups. He said his family has enjoyed the winter program.
“Our kids love playing in the YMCA league, the rules are very kid friendly and we seem to always find the level of competition we are looking for. The facilities are amazing and I always look forward to the start of our YMCA season,” said Perkins.
The YMCA offers several other youth sports throughout the year. For more information contact Kerrick Franklin at kfranklin@mansfieldy.org.
