The Ohio General Assembly held their Opening Ceremonies for the 131st General Assembly Jan. 5, officially marking the beginning of the new legislative session.

During the ceremonies, the members of the Ohio Senate unanimously reelected State Sen. Larry Obhof (R–Medina) to serve as majority whip. Obhof has served as whip since January 2013. He represents the 22nd Senate District, which includes Medina, Ashland and Richland Counties and portions of Holmes County.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of the 22nd District,” said Obhof. “The state has made great strides over the past four years, and I look forward to building on that progress during the upcoming General Assembly.”

As majority whip, Obhof is responsible for monitoring legislation and securing votes for legislation on the Senate floor. Newspapers have described him as “a lawmaker with a willingness to work across party lines,” and have observed that he is “instrumental in passing key bills.”

Obhof has represented the 22nd Senate District since 2011. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he has taught courses on legislation and civil procedure.

Obhof’s oath was administered by the Honorable Sharon Kennedy, Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, in the Senate Chamber of the historic Ohio Statehouse.

Having been elected in 2012, Obhof’s current term in the Senate, as well as his term as majority whip, will expire at midnight on December 31, 2016.
