Mary Margaret “Marty” (McDevitt) Metzger, age 87, of Shelby, died December 28, 2014 at the home of her daughter surrounded by her family.
Marty was born February 1, 1927 in Mansfield, the daughter of the late John Patrick and Veronica (Welsch) McDevitt. She graduated in 1944 from St. Peter’s High School in Mansfield and was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem where she served as secretary/bookkeeper for 26 years. In her early working career she was employed at National Electric Supply Company and Westinghouse, both in Mansfield. Aside from her faith, her greatest joy was her family. She found great pleasure in cooking, canning, and baking for her family and friends and was proud to pass these traditions along to her grandchildren.
Surviving are her children: Louann (Rob) Steiner of Mansfield, Paul (Sheila) Metzger of Shelby, Dave (Faye) Metzger of Shelby; 4 grandchildren: Katie Steiner, Krista (Colton) Dull, Sarah Metzger and John Metzger; a sister: Elizabeth Risacher of Mansfield; a brother: Michael (Jane) McDevitt of Huron; 2 sisters-in-law: Judy McDevitt of Mansfield and Joannice Metzger of Maple Heights.
On October 6, 1956 she married Wilfrid “Boots” Metzger and he preceded her in death in 2005. Also preceding her in death were a daughter: Jacqueline Ann “Jackie” Metzger; 2 grandsons: Andrew and Robert Steiner; 2 brothers: James McDevitt and John “Jack” McDevitt; 4 sisters: Dorothy McDevitt, Joan McDevitt, Barbara Thielen Forney, Sr. Michael Ann (Helen) McDevitt.
Friends and family are welcome on Friday, January 2, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement with Fr. Chris Bohnsack officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to the Jackie Metzger Scholarship Fund, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Shelby Home and Public Health, or OhioHealth MedCentral Hospice.
