The Mansfield Division of Police would like to notify the residents and businesses of the City of Mansfield of an overdue water bill scam. The police said there have been several calls from city residents stating they had received a collection call from the City of Mansfield Water Department on their past due Water bill.

The citizens are being told that their water was going to be shut off and that a city employee was on the way to shut the water off. The caller Identified himself as Michael Silva.

It is known by the Police Department that this is a scam call. The City of Mansfield Water Department will not solicit over the phone or in person for collection of an overdue water bill. City of Mansfield employees do show up from time to time to do legitimate work, but not to solicit money for bills.

If someone shows up at your door, claiming to be from the Water Department or any City Department they will have a city ID. If there is any question about the employee please call the Mansfield Police at 419-522-1234 to help you identify the worker. If someone asks you to make a payment over the phone, do not give them any personal information and hang up the phone.

“During this holiday season SCAM calls are not just limited to the collection of overdue bills. You should always be on the alert to callers that want you to give out your personal information over the phone,” states Lt. Rob Skropits of the Major Crimes Unit.

If you have any other questions please contact the City of Mansfield Water Department after eight o’clock on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 at 419-755-9785.
