Doris E. Cumberworth, age 94, resident of Shelby, died Friday morning, November 28, 2014 in MedCentral/Shelby Hospital.
Born November 13, 1920 in Shelby she was the only child of Murl and Stella (Glower) Clark. She was a 1938 graduate of Shelby High School and a lifelong Shelby resident. On March 26, 1949, Doris married Richard Cumberworth. She along with, her husband, were insurance agents who were owners of the Cumberworth Insurance Agency on Main Street, in Shelby for 30 years. Following their retirement they continued in business at the same location as proprietors of the “Ye Olde Ice Creamery”. There they served old fashioned treats until fully retiring and closing the doors in 1982.
Doris was a lifetime member of the First United Church of Christ in Shelby. This church sponsored a Vietnamese family after the end of the Vietnam War, and as co-chairman of the above, she and Dick became the American “mom and dad” to Thai and Lieu Nguyen. Doris was an avid sports fan who enjoyed both participating and watching. She also loved reading, playing cards, solving crossword puzzles and volunteering in her community, especially with Meals on Wheels.
In addition to her husband, Dick, of 65 years, she is survived by her foster Vietnamese refugee children, Thai and Lieu Nguyen and their children, Lyn and Thaison who now reside in Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents.
At Doris’s request there will be no calling hours. A remembrance of her passing will be observed during regular church services on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the United Church of Christ with Reverends Bob Flint and James Robinson officiating. Interment will held in Oakland Cemetery at a later date. Barkdull Funeral Home is assisting the Cumberworth family with arrangements.
