The American Red Cross Blood Donor App allows users to track blood donations and create donor teams.

The American Red Cross released an application for iPhones and Androids earlier this month. The international nonprofit organization has developed a variety of free apps in the past, but this one will allow blood donors to keep track of the times they have donated and even compete with other blood donors.

The Blood Donor App, commonly known as the Blood App, officially came out on Sept. 9. According to External Communications Manager Christy Sabaka, who is based in Cleveland, the application attracted over 50,000 downloads in the first day.

“I really feel that the app is great for blood donors because it gives them the power to track everything in their hands, literally. You can do so much through a smart phone these days, so why not try this out, too?” said Sabaka.

According to Red Cross’ website under Blood Facts and Statistics, “every two seconds someone needs blood in the U.S.” Also, “although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10% actually do each year.”

One reason the application was made available to donors and civilians was to encourage more donations. The Red Cross chapter in Northern Ohio covers 19 counties, and according to Sabaka, they hold 20 to 25 blood drives per day.

“The app has a function that allows users to create a team of blood donors. We’ve seen huge college and high school participation, also some companies and just individuals who like to donate,” said Sabaka.

Incorporating competition into “saving lives” is a strategy the nonprofit hopes inspires more giving.

“The Blood Donor App allows you to create a digital team for your blood drive, which is a great way to create a competition, while helping to save lives. This app is simple, convenient and fun. Help save lives by encouraging others to download the app to schedule blood donations, get rewards, rate their blood donation experience and invite friends to join their lifesaving team,” the nonprofit’s press release reads.

The application is available for both Apple and Android devices for a free download. To learn more, visit their website.
