The month of September is designated as “Safe Driving Awareness Month,” in honor of Maria Tiberi and other victims who have lost their lives in motor vehicle-related accidents.

Tiberi was a college student who died in a distracted-driving crash in Sept. 2013.

The “Safe driving awareness month” was designated when Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 294 in June of 2014.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) noted that with 2013 being a very good year in the reduction of traffic fatalities, there is a current trend that is alarming.

September fatalities have increased for the past three years. Following are the number of fatalities reported in September:

2011 there were 83 fatalities

2012 there were 96 fatalities

2013 there were 119 fatalities

ODOT encourages drivers to reverse the trend in September by keeping up the good work and striving to Save Lives and Reduce Injuries on Ohio’s roads by making the public aware and enforcing Ohio’s traffic laws.
