John E. Sargent “Bud”, 88, of Mansfield, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, following a brief illness. John had formerly lived 50 years in Lamont, CA.
John was born Sept. 25, 1925 in Omar, WV, to John E and Hazel Sargent. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Stribling (DD857), a gearing-class destroyer. John faithfully walked 10 miles a day, until he was too ill to walk. He shared his home with his six beloved companion dogs. John was a loving, sharing, generous hearted man towards those in need.
John is survived by one daughter, Brenda “Kay” and son-in-law, Peter Toth of Mansfield, 6 grandchildren, Tina, Allan, Robert, Terry Jr. of Mansfield, Wendy, Shannon of Texas, ten great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by parents, two sons, John E. Sargent III and Donald E. Sargent, one brother, Oval Sargent and his ex-wife Virginia Howard.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at Mansfield Cemetery with Pastor Rob Kurtz officiating. Richland County Joint Veterans Burial detail will perform Military Honors.
