Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home

Birtsel ”Birt” W. Scott, 79, Galion, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

Birt was born in Portsmouth, on Nov. 7, 1934 to the late Leslie A. and Eleanor (Gire) Scott.  He married Mildred M. Keirns, sharing 58 years of marriage, and she survives him.

Birt was the minister at the Open Arms Christian Church, the former Church of Christ in Iberia. Birt started his first church in his early 30’s. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a Godly man who started his mornings by praying on his knees. A very strong man, he always fought to live. Birt was known as a Dad to everyone and also a friend. While serving as a pastor, he married several couples, including his own children. Birt was very proud of his grandchildren and it always hurt him more than it did them if he had to reprimand them. Birt was always making sure that others around him felt good, his care and concern was always for others, even when he was in pain. Birt would want his family and friends to be rejoicing and celebrating that he has gone home with the Lord. Birt loved to laugh, and could take care of any situation and make it happy. Missions were a very large part of his life and he was most proud of he and his wife’s mission trip to Africa. Birt was also a member of the National Guard.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his three children and their spouses, Wallace and Tina Scott of Kenton, Sally Crisp of Galion, and William “Bill” and Missy (Buckingham) Scott of Upper Sandusky. Birt has eight grandchildren Wallace Scott, Sueann Hamilton, Darold and Donovan Crisp, Tosha Owens, Corey, Kyrie and Briana Scott, and twelve great grandchildren, his half-brother Thomas Harris of New London and sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Grant Chander of McKinney, TX.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Frederick Scott.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Galion. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at Open Arms Christian Church with Pastor Nathan Simpson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Open Arms Christian Church in care of the Funeral Home.
