James W. Wagner, 87, of Mansfield, died July 31, 2014.

Born Jan. 17, 1927 in Ironton, Ohio, he was the son of Ernest J. and Lorena Moore Wagner. James was honorably discharged from the Navy after serving our country in World War II. He attended Marietta College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in education and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from Ohio University. For 27 years, he worked at Madison Schools as a guidance counselor. He also was a ski instructor at Clearfork Ski Lodge. James was active in the Men’s Garden Club and the Retired Teacher’s Association for many years.

Surviving are his daughter, Crystal A. Paul of Cincinnati, her children Benjamin N. Douglass, Dawn R. Gannon, Steven M. Douglass and their children, Ellianna, Titus, and Bruce; son, Wesley J. Wagner of Columbus, GA and his children, Matthew S. Wagner, Angie M. McArdle, and Jimmy W. Wagner and their children, Luke, Avery, Lilly, and Joey; his chosen adopted family’s children, Laura Hendrickson and Chuck Sprague; those adopted grandchildren, Hanna, Mason, Evan, and Gracie Hendrickson and Hunter and Jase Sprgaue; and a niece, nephews, and other family members.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janet (Kit) Wagner; and sister, Roberta Malone.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Family and friends are invited to visit for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to his grandson, Ben Douglass’ urban city church, Faith Community Church, 2578 Sullivant Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43204.
