The Mansfield Fire Department and Police Department responded to an accident scene at the intersection of Mulberry Street and Park Avenue West at approximately 11:47 a.m. this morning, when a gray Buick LeSabre and a gold Chevy Impala collided. The drivers of the vehicles received minor injuries but no medical treatment.

Officer Rich Miller with the Mansfield Police Department stated that Yvonne Fry was driving the Impala and Shelly Simmons was the driver of the Buick LeSabre.

According to Mansfield Police Department’s Sgt. Jon Ahles, the LeSabre was headed south on Mulberry Street and ran a red light at the intersection of Mulberry and Park Avenue West. In doing so, the LeSabre struck the Impala, which was heading west onto Park Avenue. The LeSabre then hit a nearby utility pole, which snapped in half.

Ahles said the victims received minor injuries and were not transported to the hospital. They had no passengers in the vehicles with them.

Witnesses of the incident, Lawrence Rose and Lacey Atherton, were driving behind the Impala when it got hit. They said that the driver of the Impala was unable to remove herself from the vehicle and so they tried to help her.

Rose noted that he thought he heard that the LeSabre’s brakes went out. “The LeSabre is known for its brakes going out,” he said.

The Mansfield Street Department responded to help with the removal of the utility pole and Shelly Smith and Sons towed the two vehicles.
