An unoccupied house at 133 Scotland Blvd. in Mansfield caught fire Thursday morning, with Springfield Township and Madison Fire Departments still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

“We’re not sure exactly where it started at, and right now it’s undetermined what’s going on with it,” said Lt. Mike Mullins with Springfield Township Fire Department. “Until we get a better look at it, we won’t know.”

The fire department responded at approximately 9:40 a.m. when neighbors across the street at 134 Scotland Blvd. reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of the house. The neighbors noted their lights flickered approximately 15 minutes before they saw the smoke coming from 133 Scotland Blvd.

Although no flames were visible from the street, Mullins said it was a working fire when the department arrived.

“There is pretty extensive heat and smoke damage, with quite a bit of fire damage in the basement,” he said. “There was quite a bit of flames, a lot of contents were burning in there but nothing we couldn’t handle.”

Mullins said firefighters were able to put the fire out pretty simply with their first lines, then pulled another line for more fire found later on into the house. He noted firefighters were able to contain the fire pretty quickly. Siding was removed from the front of the house later on to extinguish an extension of the fire that had spread into the wall.

“We had mutual aid from the Madison Fire Department, and we did a second alarm on this but we canceled after we figured out we were OK,” said Mullins.

Approximately an hour after arriving at the scene, Mullins said the Fire Marshall was en route to get a better look at the cause of the fire.
