Ski and snowboarding season is in full swing. As the calendar year enters late January and early February that means sports fans can find snowboarders and skiers doing some of their best work at upcoming competitions.
Last weekend, Snow Trails hosted a West Coast Chill Rail Competition. The event showcased a number of seasoned skiers and snowboarders in the Pro Division and some developing skiers in the Grom Division. Each division was allowed two runs down the slope.
Judges were stations at each feature dotting the slopes. As participants chose which feature of the course to attempt tricks and stunts on, judges stood close by to award points.
Ahead, the resort will host more events for winter athletes.
This weekend’s Mid-Season Party will feature an on-snow competition at the base of the Mt. Mansfield Slope. The Jan. 25 event will feature freestyle skier and snowboarder participants within view of the resort lodge. A fireworks show is slated to follow at 10 p.m.
The resort’s popular Big Air competition will take place on February 8. Skiers and snowboarders from the local region and parts of the Midwest will make their way to Possum Run Road for a shot at a two-tiered ramp.
The ramp will feature two levels. A shorter, more gradually sloped ramp will allow competitors to gain more distance. A taller, more sharply angled ramp will allow skiers and snowboarders to gain more “air” for which the event is noted.
As they launch, competitors will be judged on amplitude, number of spins, style and landing. Age for entry is 12 years old and up.
Practice runs are scheduled for 3-5 p.m. with the competition beginning at 6 p.m.
