The Shelby Board of Education welcomed three new members on Monday evening. The night also saw multiple donations from classes and organizations were made towards the Shelby City Schools and Assistant Superintendent/Director of Curriculum Paul Walker updated board members on the progress of Race to the Top (RttT).

The board’s newest members Lynn Friebel, Scott Rose, and Randy Terman, took oaths of office and are now officially active. Returning to the board were members Bill Roush and Lorie White. White was voted in as the new president and Roush as the vice president.

The district was also the beneficiary of several new donations. The Shelby Foundation donated $4,000 for a motorized flag for the gym in the high school and $1,000 for Whippet News.

The Class of 1977 donated $2,000 and the Class of 1982 donated $1,100. Both donations will fund the motorized flag.

The Gimbel Foundation donated $3,500 and Fackler Chiropractic Center donated $1,000 towards Whippet Theatre.

“We are very appreciative of all the donations. We never can be too redundant about it because the people and the organizations within this community are wonderful and they always step forward and help our kids, schools, and staff with wonderful contributions,” said Superintendent Tim Tarvin.

In other items, Walker provided the board with an update on Race to the Top (RttT). “In March and May of this school year, the district will be having a chance to experience the assessments for the first time. We still have to take the Ohio Achievement Assessments, so there will be quite a bit of assessments coming up,” said Walker.

Walker noted that all of the assessments that the students take will be online. “We have enough in place to go through this trial period coming up in March and May with the field assessments. It will be a good opportunity to see if the technology is where it needs to be. It will be a trial run and we won’t be scored on anything. It will really be a practice test,” said Walker.

The board approved a Newhope contract for occupational therapy/physical therapy/speech at a rate of $72 per hour. This price is the same as the previous contract. The board also approved a NCOCC internet service provider contract and the contract with industrial appraisal, including a full review of inventory, with a cost of $6,000. Also meeting board approval was an OSBA membership that resulted in a cost of $5,289, which is the same as the previous amount.

“We are very appreciative of all the donations. We never can be too redundant about it because the people and the organizations within this community are wonderful and they always step forward and help our kids, schools, and staff with wonderful contributions,” said Superintendent Tim Tarvin.
