The Clear Fork Lady Colts earned an Ohio Cardinal Conference (OCC) victory over the Lexington Lady Lex on Saturday afternoon at Lexington High School. The Lady Colts would go on to lead every statistical category in the game of basketball, from overall points right down to bench points.
“We have struggled in our half court offense, we have tried to run things and they just do not work. So we full court press all of the time and to get easy buckets off of turnovers really helps our team” said Lady Colts Head Coach Heidi Roush.
Clear Fork had 35 points off of turnovers. The Lady Colts forced 28 turnovers on the game and racked up 19 steals.
Clear Fork did most of its damage in the opening period by jumping out to a 20-4 lead using a 13-0 run to end the frame. In the quarter, the Lady Colts took command and showed just what their pressure defense could do. It could create offense from defense and light up the scoreboard at the same time. They would force Lady Lex into seven turnovers and hold them to just 4 points. Lady Lex was in for a long afternoon. Lexington would never have the lead the entire game and would only force a tie game one time.
Lexington got off 25 shots for the game. They made just six of those shots to go 24% from the field. Little seemed to get going their way the entire afternoon. Lady Lex was able to spread the scoring around among seven players with senior wing Kelly Rhodes leading the way with six points while also adding seven rebounds.
While the Lady Colts created turnovers, one thing that they did not do was commit turnovers. The Lady Colts only committed 9 for the game.
Junior guard Deijah Swihart paced the Lady Colts on offense as well as defense. She piled up 11 points while adding eight steals and three assists. Junior wing Morgan Bailey added ten points for the Lady Colts, who saw nine players reach the scoring column. Clear Fork was able to rotate 11 players in and out to keep fresh legs on the floor for their full court defense. Junior post Mattie VanOrman dropped 8 points and seven rebounds for a solid all around game.
Clear Fork had 19 points from their bench players to just 5 for Lexington. The Lady Colts also dominated the boards with 34 total to 23 for Lady Lex.
Lady Lex drops to 2-7 on the year and 0-5 in league play. They will face Shelby on Thursday at Lexington High School with a 7:30 tip off time.
The Clear Fork Lady Colts jump to 5-4 on the year and 3-3 in the OCC. They will face Wooster at Clear Fork High School next Saturday with a 2:30 tip off time.
