Forty-five years ago a local business was started in the basement of a family home by a father and son.

Today, that business, family-owned Bob & Bob Door Co., celebrates its 45 year anniversary and did so in a very family style way.

The celebration took place at their new location, 903 West Longview Avenue in Mansfield. An official ribbon cutting took place at 10 a.m. with Mayor Tim Theaker in attendance, door prizes and a free lunch served to all who stopped in.

“We strive so hard to be a small, family oriented business and we just want to say thank you to the community that has done so much for us,” said Bob Crabbs, owner.

Bob & Bob Door Co. began when Crabbs’ father, Bob, was unable to find enough work as a union carpenter. The elder Crabbs began hanging Genie garage door openers and posed the idea to his son one day that they should start their own business installing garage doors. Bob & Bob Door Co. was born.

In the mid-eighties, Crabbs and his wife Kathy bought the business from his father who was suffering from health issues and opened the business at a new location on Walker Lake Road where they stayed for approximately 18 years. The business moved once more to West Longview Avenue in 2000 and stayed until it was evident the building wasn’t big enough for the growing business.

They didn’t move far, just down the road a bit and into a bigger, more visible location. According to Crabbs daughter, Debbie Newmeyer, the move was necessary for many reasons. “We needed more space, business continues to grow and we now have space for a showroom,”she added.

Newmeyer has worked for her father for 20 years, manages the business for her father and has been as her father put it, “She is an important part of the business, we are very proud of her and what she does.” Crabbs added,” I call her our lady entrepreneur, she helped us take everything that was all on paper and put it on the computer.”

As part of their desire to give back to the community that has supported their family through the years, Bob & Bob Door Co. asked only that people stop in to the open house to enjoy lunch and to bring a non-perishable food item for a chance to win a drawing. The food items and or monetary donations collected were donated to the Salvation Army to help families in need.

Newmeyer commented,”We were wanting to give back to the community and we felt this was a good way to do that.”

Bob & Bob Door Co. sells and installs garage doors, Genie garage openers, residential entry doors, commercial steel doors, Atrium and Sunrise windows as well as gates and grills.

Crabbs stated they are looking to hire another experienced door hanger and encourages those interested to contact his daughter Debbie at 419-747-2255 or 1-800-676-2507.
