FINDLAY — Mansfield Senior’s record-setting season didn’t go unnoticed across northwest Ohio.
The Tygers, who were unbeaten in the regular season for the first time in school history and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, were well represented when the All-Northwest District football team was released Thursday night.
Senior receiver Chek Washington was selected the Division II Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive end Antonio Sanderfer was the Lineman of the Year and coach Chioke Bradley was the Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Lima Senior’s Mike Fell.
A Division I recruit with offers from several Mid-American Conference schools, Washington caught 67 passes for 1,190 yards and 10 touchdowns. He became the first player in school history to top 1,000 receiving yards and had two touchdown receptions in last week’s second-round playoff loss to New Albany despite playing with a separated shoulder. He also had 48 tackles and three interceptions from his safety spot.
Sanderfer was virtually unblockable during a stellar three-year varsity career. The senior had 86 tackles, a team-high 38 tackles for loss and a team-high 13.5 sacks.
A 1994 Senior High graduate, Bradley has led his alma mater to the playoffs each of the past two seasons. The Tygers were 19-4 in that span.
Quarterback Jalen Reese joined Washington on the first team offense. The three-year starter passes for a single-season record 2,619 yard and 27 touchdowns while completing 185 of 305 passes. He will graduate as the program’s career passing leader.
Tarrance Brooks was a first-team selection on the offensive line. The senior helped protect Reese and clear the way for 1,500-yard running back Tyquan Vickers.
Hutch Blackstone was a first-team selection at kicker. The senior booted 11 field goals and was 55 for 57 on extra-points, scoring a team-high 88 points.
Linebacker Jaleel Taylor earned a spot on the first-team defense. The senior led the Tygers with 105 tackles, including 25 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.
Mansfield Senior’s second-team picks were Vickers, offensive lineman Marshall Levins, linebacker Tre Harris and safety Malon Samuel. Honorable mention selections were defensive lineman Traevon Dickerson, linebacker Mitch Nixon and wide receiver and defensive back Asante’ Wilder.
