At Crestview Elementary in Ashland as in many schools across the county, gratitude and respect remained the lessons of the day as students, teachers and staff gathered to honor the service of men and women from every branch of service for Veterans Day on Monday.

In a Veteran’s Day Program presented by the second grade students, patriotic songs filled the auditorium. The wolves from the Cub Scout Troop 214 had the distinct honor of presenting the flag as they represented the role of Color Guard.

One by one mothers, fathers, grandfathers, uncles and friends were introduced by students praising their service and sacrifices. As each veteran stepped forward they received recognition for duty and were presented with a red rose.

Over 40 veterans representing every branch of military including, the Army, Air Force, Air National Guard, and Marines were honored in person or in a video slide show that included veterans who are no longer with us, but their memory deserved honor and recognition and thanks.

“I am glad to see they still say the Pledge of Allegiance and are singing all of the patriotic songs. I feel my service is something for me to be proud of and it’s nice to feel appreciated and shown the respect,” said Jeff Schnell, an Army active reservist.

Schnell, Ashland, has served five years active duty in the Army as part of the 486 Engineer Company, third platoon, and currently has two and a half years in the active reserves.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, veterans in attendance were asked to stand so that they could be honored with applause and thanks for their service to the country.
