Crestview made its charge, but there was no catching Toledo Ottawa Hills during the final round of the Division III state tournament.
The defending state champion Cougars, who were in fourth after Friday’s opening-round 336, carded a 329 on Saturday for a two-day total of 665 and a third-place finish.
Ottawa Hills followed Friday’s 329 with a 318 for a two-day 647 to capture the state title. Columbus Academy (323-336–659) was second.
Senior Josh Brooks led the charge for Crestview, closing with a 75 for a two-day 80-75–155. Brooks finished in a tie for sixth place with West Liberty-Salem’s Nick Sims.
Junior Ben Olewiler (78-81–159) tied for 10th with Dawson-Bryant’s Brent Morgan, while junior Bryce Lutz (81-82–163) tied for 12th with Wellington School’s Princeton Ball, Ottawa Hills’ Michael Denner and Lima Central Catholic’s James Reipenhoff. Junior Michael Staniford (97-91–188) tied for 56th with Bluffton’s Rich Streicher and sophomore Joe Stimpert (103-105–208) was 70th.
Meanwhile, Shelby freshman Alexis Jones tied for 14th in the Division II girls tournament on OSU’s Gray Course. Jones followed her opening-round 76 with an 85 for a two-day total of 161. She tied with Huron’s Rafaella Gioffre, Dayton Chaminade Julienne’s Ellie Cronin and Bexley’s Liza Weisman.
Kansas Lakota’s Makayla Dull was the individual medalist, firing a 69-73–142.
“Alexis had a few bad holes, but she hung in there,” Shelby coach Rene’ Burtscher said. “She would tell you that she struggled, but she has nothing to be ashamed of. I told her, ‘You are one of 72 lucky girls to be playing at state.’ ”
Jones was one of just six freshmen to play in the state tournament.
“She has such high expectations for herself,” Burtscher said. “This was a great experience for her.”
