Mayor Darrell Banks announced to council the Bellville Safe Routes to School committee is planning a walk/ride week beginning October 7. Wednesday, October 9 is the national SRTS walk/ride day with events planned all over the nation. One event in particular will take place in Bellville on October 9.

Bellville students on bikes can ride with Bellville police officer Burt Skeen to Bellville elementary school while parents and children who walk will be accompanied by members of the SRTS committee, including Mayor Darrell Banks and Bellille Police Chief Ron Willey.

Students will be given punch cards that the Safety Patrol guards will punch each morning. The first 14 children to turn in a punch card will receive a free helmet.

“If any of you would like to join the event and walk and show your support I would appreciate it,”said Banks.

Banks also announced that in recognition of the Be Focal/Buy Local campaign sponsored by RCDG a Shop Hop is scheduled for Bellville on October 23. Mayor Banks noted that he did not have more details at this time regarding the event.

In response to a rumor started on Facebook during the Bellville Street Fair claiming residents were victims of credit card fraud Banks stated,”It didn’t happen, there is no evidence to support any type of credit card fraud took place at the fair, concerning residents or involvement of any vendors participating in the fair. How that rumor got started I do not know, but want to make it clear that there is absolutely no evidence of any crime taking place.”

Banks went on to say it simply was a matter of an “out of control rumor” without merit.
