The Madison Lady Rams swept Mansfield Senior Lady Tygers on Thursday night. The Lady Tygers struggled during the first set, being topped by the Lady Rams with a score of 25-13. During the second set, the Lady Rams came out swinging ready to continue their momentum.
The Lady Rams took the second set with a score of 25-16. At the start of the third set, the Lady Tygers displayed some strong hitting, but it was not enough to take down the unstoppable Lady Rams. The third set ended with the Lady Rams topping the Lady Tygers with a score of 25-17.
Lady Tygers head coach, Catina Mitchell, shared her view of her team’s performance during the match. “We were hitting well throughout the game, but we had an off day. This team can be extremely competitive, but they did come out a little shy tonight,” said Mitchell. Mitchell shared strategies on how her team can improve throughout the season. “We need to improve on our passing skills and we really need to play more aggressively. Working on our defense is a must for the rest of the season,” said Mitchell.
First year head coach of the Lady Rams, Brian Votaw, was pleased with how his team played, but added there is always room for improvement. “We did a very nice job serving tonight. Alexandra Brown is very talented and is a great hitter. I was pleased with her serving. We can improve defensively and we have to continue to push ourselves even when we are leading,” said Votaw.
Senior Elexius Harris of the Lady Tygers performed well, racking up 10 attacks, 8 kills, 6 serves, 7 digs, and 6 blocks. Following Harris, junior Jeryn Reese added 7 attacks, 11 kills, and 7 serves. Senior Janae Harris had 7 kills and 7 blocks, while Kiasha Franklin tallied 17 assists.
The Lady Rams displayed some heavy hitting on the court. Junior Mekaila Grose had 16 kills throughout the match while junior Chase Carper added 7 digs. Junior Katie Wagner contributed 34 assists and junior Alexandra Brown had 6 aces, 11 kills, and 7 digs.
The squads’ next games are both on September 17. The Lady Rams travel to Ashland and the Lady Tygers will compete at Lexington.
