Connie Walls retired from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department last week after celebrating her 24 year anniversary on July 10. Retiring is a life change and can come with some anxiety. But Walls was doing fine on her last day of work, August 15.

“I’m looking forward to it now,” Walls said, “My goal was retirement at 65.” And she’s not planning to find another job.

“I’m looking forward to art projects: painting, watercolors,” she said. She also plans to travel and take her granddaughter on vacation.

Walls was the records supervisor for the department. Her position included managing criminal statistics, reporting to state and government entities, office management, and sex offender registration.

The position has evolved considerably since she took the position 16 years ago. Technology replaced paper filing and computer programs became more advanced. She also worked for three sheriffs and most recently, Sheriff Steve Sheldon.

“I have enjoyed working with everyone here,” stated Walls, “I enjoyed my work. My job has been interesting.”

And she won’t be replaced. Her responsibilities have been divided among other staff members.

She will be missed.

“Connie’s been a true joy to work with, here and throughout my career,” stated Maj. Dale Fortney, “She’s been very professional. It [her retirement] is a tremendous loss for the department.”

Walls grew up in Mansfield and attended Madison High School. She has also held positions with other companies including Sears and Fashion Bug. She has been married to Jeff Walls for five years and she has three children: Darrin, Tracy, and Chad Colegrove.
