State Representative Mark Romanchuk presented the City of Shelby with an Auditor of State Award with Distinction during their council meeting on Monday night. Also, Nichole Witchey gave a presentation on the success of the science camp that took place earlier in the summer and Dawn Lund of Utility Financial Solutions LLC gave a presentation. Mayor Marilyn John gave updates on events that took place over the busy weekend.

Romanchuk presented the state award from the Ohio House of Representatives. “The city of Shelby is indeed deserving of acknowledgement. The city has received a clean financial audit report and we are certain that Shelby will continue to advance its standard of excellence long into the future,” said Romanchuk.

“I would like to thank Bob for helping me understand the relationship between local and state government. I know he plays a huge role and I would like to thank him and everyone for the hard work they are doing,” said Romanchuk.  Robert Lafferty is the Director of Finance for Shelby.

Nichole Witchey, organizer of a science camp that occurred earlier in the summer at Seltzer Park, provided a presentation on what campers did during camp and how it benefited them. Witchey volunteered to teach the camp of 30 students and also received grants from the Shelby Foundation and the Richland County Foundation for supplies in the camp.

“We had five days of exploring and having fun in the park and each day had a different theme. The kids learned about trees, plants, birds, water and creatures that live in water. We were focused on environmental education, while still having fun. We wanted to get kids and adults outside and enjoying nature,” said Witchey. “The kids were so excited to be outside and explore nature and as an environmental educator this is what I wanted to push,” said Witchey.

Lund presented the electric cost of service study that was conducted on Shelby. “The city of Shelby hired our firm to conduct an electric cost service study and with that we conducted a five year financial projection,” said Lund. “I am very pleased with where we are moving in costs of service results because we don’t need a rate increase,” said Lund.

“It was a pleasure working with the staff of Shelby. I received any information I needed in a very timely manner and they made themselves available when I had questions. This is what makes for a good, efficient study,” said Lund.

Mayor John praised “The Black Cyclone.” “It was a wonderful event and a lot of the scenes were from Shelby and there a lot of old Shelby names that were used in the play,” said John. Along with “The Black Cyclone”, the Shelby Cruise In occurred on Saturday, August 17. “Given everything else going on in the county, you wouldn’t have known that if you were in downtown Shelby because it was just packed downtown,” said John.

“The city employees got an award from the Shelby Cruise Foundation for the continued support of the Shelby Cruise In. Our police, fire, and utility departments are great to work with and it is great that they were recognized for all their hard work,” said John.

Some legislation that was passed on Monday night included amended ordinance number 29 and ordinance number 32. Resolution number 27 passed that would allow certain sidewalks in the city to be repaired or constructed.

Shelby City Council will meet on Monday, August 26 at 6:45 p.m. to further discuss the presentation from Utility Financial Solutions LLC and resolution number 29 which includes purchasing a new roof structure for the digester at the Shelby Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The city has received a clean financial audit report and we are certain that Shelby will continue to advance its standard of excellence long into the future.”
