“This is fantastic support that Shelby is encouraging to its community,” said Marlys Slone, Outpatient and Community Dietician at MedCentral.

The MedCentral diabetes education team will have a free program to inform individuals how to benefit their health and prevention against diabetes at Shelby Health Department.

“The goal is to promote a healthier lifestyle to reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes,” said Slone.

The Shelby Health Department will be working with MedCentral to bring courses to Shelby.

“We’ve been working with Farm to Plate at the Shelby Farmer’s Market to provide nutrition information with the chef’s presentation,” said Slone. “I was at the Shelby Farmer’s Market on August 3 and I was handing out nutrition bookmarks that provide information on a specific food. The information provides the benefits that are offered on that specific food.”

“I had between 15-20 people come up and ask about nutrition at the farmer’s market. It’s great because people can experience new foods and recipes and obtain new information about the food they are consuming,” said Slone. Slone will be also be at the Shelby Farmer’s Market on August 24.

Amy Smith, Outpatient Dietician at MedCentral will be conducting the class, “Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle and weight” on August 20 from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

Annette Baxter, RN at MedCentral also teaches a class on pre-diabetes. “Reducing Your Risk of Diabetes”, will be held on September 10 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. at Shelby Health Department. To register for the classes, call 419-520-2550.
