MedCentral Mansfield Hospital has earned re-verification as a Level II Trauma Center by the
Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement recognizes the trauma center’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.
Surveyors met recently with Robert Maxwell, M.D., MedCentral’s trauma medical director, Laura Pond, trauma program manager, and Robert O’Brian, trauma registrar.
Experienced trauma surgeons comprise the team of surveyors who spent two days at Mansfield Hospital performing the intensive review. They visited several departments and talked with many staff members who are integral to the delivery of trauma care.
Mansfield Hospital was originally verified as a Trauma Center in 2004 and is the only trauma center in the north central Ohio region. The nearest trauma centers are in Cleveland, Columbus and Akron.
To qualify as a Trauma Center, the hospital must provide not only quality hospital resources necessary to address the uniqueness of trauma-related injuries, but also a complete spectrum of care that includes the pre-hospital phase and rehabilitation.
The actual Trauma Center designation is awarded by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, based on the verification program of the American College of Surgeons. MedCentral has been officially designated a Level II Trauma Center by the state and remain dedicated to expert care of trauma patients in north central Ohio.
