A boxer needs his coaches, and that’s particularly true for high school student Chaise Nelson as he prepares to compete in the Ukraine for the Amateur World Boxing Championships as the 125 lb. class representative of the 13-member Team USA in September. His coaches are his father Mike Nelson and Billy Salser, both of Mansfield.

The U.S. Junior Olympic team will pay Nelson’s expenses to Kiev, Ukraine, but not those of his coaches. Nelson hopes his father and Salser can accompany him and coach him during the championship. His Mansfield “team” is hold a fundraising exhibition fight on August 17. The doors open at 4 p.m. The fight will also generate funds to help with traveling expenses for training and competition in national tournaments.

The Warrior Brawl will be held at the Ontario Middle School Gymnasium. Ring Side tickets are $25 and General Admission are $15. Local boxers Nick Stevens and Nathan Benavides will be two of the participants; and, of course, Nelson will be the Main Event.

“Chaise is a true Olympic hopeful and it’s been proven with past Olympic Champions that community involvement in form of sponsorship helped other Olympic hopefuls become Olympic Champions,” said Mike Nelson. As his logo says, he’s “Chaise N’ the Dream.”

Nelson is currently at Olympic Training Center for a training camp and he returns to Mansfield on August 8. He will only be in Mansfield for 10 before returning the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and then on to the Ukraine on September 4. The World Championships will be held from Sept. 5-15.

Local sponsors for Warrior Brawl include the Carpenters local 735 and Universal Enterprises Inc. Additional sponsorships are welcomed.
