Evelyn P. Woodard, 96, of Ontario, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at her home. Born January 17, 1917 in Knox County, she was the daughter of Edgar C. and Grace (Weikel) Matney. Evelyn graduated from Tecumseh High School in Michigan in 1934 where her fellow Glee Club members said “her voice was but the shadow of a sound”. After moving to Mansfield in 1943, Evelyn was a homemaker until 1953 when she began working as a waitress in the coffee shop at the Leland Hotel until it closed. She was a lifelong member of Richland County Steam Threshers Association serving as secretary and treasurer and a member of First English Lutheran Church, joining with her husband Thomas in the mid 1950s. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, dancing, and traveling, having been in almost all of the 50 states.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Champion of Parker, AZ; son, David Woodard of Mansfield; grandsons, Van Champion of Huntington Beach, CA, Bret Woodard of Mansfield, and Zachery Woodard of Crestline; granddaughter, Vicki (Roger) Qurion of Bolder City, NV; seven great grandchildren, Cody, Summer, Brittany, Alana, Dillan, Silas, and Ryan; and brother, Robert Matney of Mansfield. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years Thomas J. Woodard whom she married on June 18, 1938 in Jasper, MI, and sisters, Viola Ruhl and Eunice Anderson.
Friends may call Wednesday, August 7, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Ontario. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Timothy Storms. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
