James David Myers, who turned 47 on July 3, escaped the Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI) Wednesday night after an inmate check at 9 p.m. revealed Myers was absent. At this time, how Myers escaped is not known. Myers was, however, assigned maintenance duties at the facility.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is conducting a criminal investigation with cooperation from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Mansfield City Police Department. They are conducting an extensive search.

“We have an ongoing investigation at this time; therefore, specific details cannot be released,” stated Warden Terry Tibbals, “In accordance with policy the victim of his crimes has been contacted and we will remain in contact with the victim throughout the situation.”

The warden added, “He is considered dangerous. Howeve, he is not known to have any weapons at this time.”

Myers was admitted to ManCI from Summit County in December 2010, on charges of kidnapping, rape, corruption with drugs, aggravated burglary, menacing by stalking, and weapons under disability (unauthorized possession). His victim is receiving police protection.

Ohio Highway State Patrol Lt. Herb Homan said that the victim is in Tallmadge and is under police protection.

He also noted that speculation about the inmate’s activities could impair the investigation.

Myers is described as a white male with blond hair, five feet eleven inches tall and weighing 172-pounds.

Major Dale Fortney of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department advised residents to be careful. “Don’t open the door for anyone you don’t know. Don’t pick up hitchhikers. And call law enforcement authorities if you see anything suspicious.

Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately or call the Mansfield Correctional Institution located on North Main St., at (419) 526-2000. Tibbals asked that if the inmate is seen, no one should attempt to engage him but instead note his location and direction of travel.
