This week Shelby Science Camp encouraged children to put their thinking hats on and explore the science world at Seltzer Park in Shelby. This is the first year that the camp has taken place and it has been a success. “It’s been going well The. kids are very enthusiastic about learning,” said Nichole Witchey-Putnam, director of the camp.
The camp took place June 24-28 and the camp was offered to students in grades 2-6. Each day, there was a new theme for students to engage in. On June 26, the theme was bird species. The guest speaker was Steve McKee of the Gorman Nature Center.
McKee shared his knowledge of bird species with the students. There were stations set up that gave the students a hands-on experience. He also set up a net that would allow students to view live birds up close.
The funding from the camp came from a grant provided by the Richland County Foundation and the Shelby Foundation. The grant allowed supplies to be purchased for variety of activities. The Shelby Science Camp was sponsored by the Shelby Green Committee and the Shelby Parks Department.
Students were able to learn about water, plants, and animals throughout the camp. Putnam said, “A favorite activity the kids have enjoyed is collecting species from the creek. It’s been fun to watch them explore everything.”
