Richland Source and Ashland Source are announcing the second annual Source Media Journalism Fellowship Program, to take place this summer.

MANSFIELD — Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.

Whether those words are attributable to Benjamin Franklin or a Chinese proverb is up for debate, but the principle isn’t.

We learn best by doing.

That’s why Richland Source and Ashland Source are proud to announce the second annual summer fellowship program.

The Source Journalism Fellowship gives area teens the chance to spend a week in our newsroom, gaining the knowledge and skills they need to tell the stories that shape our community.

This free program starts with a weeklong intensive from June 22 to June 26 at Richland Source headquarters in downtown Mansfield. Over the course of that week, students will learn the basics of news writing and photography and produce articles for publication on Richland Source and/or Ashland Source.

After that, they’ll have the opportunity for further mentorship from our staff, additional story assignments and the chance to see more of their work published over the course of the summer.

“This is more than a workshop or a résumé builder,” said Richland Source reporter Katie Ellington Serrao. “This is a chance to learn what a day in the life of a local journalist looks like and have your work published.”

Sessions will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Participants must have their own transportation.

“We would like to encourage all students interested in this project to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Larry Phillips, managing editor of Source Media Properties.

“Our staff is excited to share their experiences and foster that enthusiasm for our profession to budding journalists of tomorrow.”
