What truly sets YMCA Child Care apart is its commitment to access and affordability.

For many working families in North Central Ohio, finding reliable, high-quality child care is one of the most important — and often most daunting — decisions they face. The process can feel intimidating and overwhelming, especially when balancing work schedules, financial pressures, and the desire to provide the very best for their children.

As the largest child care provider in the county, the YMCA of North Central Ohio plays a critical role in supporting families through accessible, high-quality care.

The YMCA operates nine child care locations across the county, offering a full continuum of services including Preschool and Early Learning programs, as well as before- and after-school care for school-age children up to age 12. This allows families to find consistent, dependable care close to home, work, or school — an essential support for parents managing demanding schedules.

YMCA Child Care programs focus on the whole child. Licensed and trained staff guide children through age-appropriate learning, social-emotional development, and healthy habits in a safe and supportive environment. Through structured routines, enrichment activities, and intentional play, children build confidence and skills that prepare them for success in school and beyond.

What truly sets YMCA Child Care apart is its commitment to access and affordability.

Many families earn too much to qualify for publicly funded child care assistance through Job and Family Services but still cannot comfortably afford private-pay child care. This financial “middle ground” can feel overwhelming — forcing difficult choices that impact employment, education, and family stability.

The YMCA’s Open Doors Scholarship Program helps bridge that gap by providing income-based financial assistance to families who need support.

In 2025, 46 families received Open Doors scholarships totaling $117,930, ensuring families could remain in the workforce or pursue higher education while their children received high-quality care in a safe and nurturing environment.

One local mother, preparing to enter nursing school, shared how the scholarship has changed her path forward:

“I’m starting nursing school and need dependable care while I attend classes and clinicals. On one income, daycare simply wasn’t affordable. This scholarship allows me to continue my education and build a better future for my family.”

Her story reflects a broader impact. Open Doors is more than financial assistance — it is stability, opportunity, and peace of mind.

“When child care becomes unaffordable, it doesn’t just affect a family—it affects our workforce, our schools, and our entire community,” said Nicolle Cherry, Executive Director of Child Care for the YMCA of North Central Ohio.

“Our Open Doors Scholarship ensures that families who fall into that financial gap still have access to high-quality care. It’s not just about supervision — it’s about opportunity, stability, and investing in the next generation.”

The ripple effects are significant. When families have reliable child care, employers retain workers, children enter school better prepared, and communities grow stronger.

As the county’s largest child care provider, the YMCA of North Central Ohio remains committed to meeting families where they are — offering quality programs, flexible scheduling options, and financial assistance when it’s needed most.
