Matthew David “Matt” Garber, 69, of Lexington, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 11, 2026, surrounded by love, with his wife Connie, special niece Rashell, and nephew Cameron by his side.
Matt was born March 5, 1956, in Mansfield, Ohio, to John L. and Phyllis (Sherman) Garber. He attended Lexington Schools and was a proud graduate of Lexington High School, Class of 1974.
Matt dedicated nearly his entire life to John L. Garber Materials. He began working there at just 16 years old, taking on odd jobs before earning his driver’s license and moving into truck driving. Through years of hard work and commitment as Vice President of the company, he retired in 2022—leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, leadership, and pride in the family business.
On November 5, 1983, Matt married the love of his life, Connie Goble, in Lexington, Ohio. Together they built a life rooted in devotion, shared adventures, and simple joys.
Matt was a member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW, both in Lexington. He loved attending races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course whenever he could and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians. He also enjoyed Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, often finding comfort in their familiar stories. Matt had a deep appreciation for nature and treasured long country drives with Connie—especially behind the wheel of his dream car, a 2022 Corvette.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Connie Garber, grandchildren Hollie Garber and Nick Garber, brother John A. (Eilene) Garber, nephews Jason Garber and Dustin Garber, special cousin who was like a brother to him Lester Beasley, cousin Danny Beasley, aunt Jane Beasley, special friend who was like a sister to him Robin Gaston, and many extended family members and friends.
Matt was preceded in death by his beloved son Brian Garber, granddaughter Charlotte Garber, and his parents.
The family will receive guests on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 12 to 1 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Memorial Park, where Matt and his son Brian will be laid to rest together.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richland County Humane Society.
