In a time when public discourse often feels brittle and divided, an upcoming Kaleidoscope Community Conversations event will turn to history for guidance.
On Thursday, Oct. 2, Dr. Lerone Martin of Stanford University will take the stage at the Renaissance Theatre for an evening devoted to effective communication across ideological divides. Martin is a nationally recognized professor of religious studies and African American history, as well as director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute.
For Mansfield, his visit carries an added layer of connection: Martin grew up in Fostoria, Ohio, and returns often with his family. That grounding in Ohio life, paired with his scholarship on Martin Luther King Jr., positions him uniquely to speak to local audiences wrestling with today’s fractured culture.
“Kaleidoscope is about bringing sharp minds into our community and letting people sit together in the same room to wrestle with challenging ideas,” said Jay Allred, Richland Source CEO and emcee for the evening.
“Dr. Martin will help us look backward to the 1950s and 60s, when America was deeply divided and violent, and ask what King’s work has to teach us right now.”
A conversation rooted in history and faith
Martin’s scholarship is steeped in King’s theology and activism. In a recent interview, he underscored one of King’s most enduring convictions:
“King’s faith taught him the most important thing for one to remember is human beings are made in the image of God … that means every individual is important, and every single life is important,” Martin said. “If we start from there, that is a message of universality.”
The Oct. 2 program will include a conversation with Allred and questions from the audience. Organizers hope attendees leave with both perspective and practical tools for communicating across differences.
“Our goal is for each member of the audience to walk away with a strengthened resolve to keep engaging and listening to folks with whom they disagree,” Allred said.
Accessible, inclusive, community-centered
From the beginning, Kaleidoscope was designed to be as welcoming as possible. Tickets follow a pay-what-you-can model, ensuring affordability for all.

Richland County Transit will offer complimentary door-to-door transportation for residents of Mansfield, Ontario, Madison and Lexington. To reserve a ride, call 419-522-4504. Same-day scheduling may be possible, though advance reservations are encouraged.
The free rides are funded by the Richland County Foundation, which has been a key supporter of Kaleidoscope from its inception.
Continuing the dialogue
The Oct. 2 event will not be the end of the conversation. A follow-up engagement session, Authentic Conversations, is set for Thursday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Ontario Branch of the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library. That gathering will give attendees a chance to process and dig deeper into the themes raised by Martin’s talk.
Since its launch in 2023, Kaleidoscope has drawn international authors, scholars and thought leaders to Mansfield, exploring topics from poverty and economic development to aging and the Black experience in America. Past speakers have consistently remarked on the warmth and curiosity of local audiences.
For organizers, that community spirit is exactly the point.
“Kaleidoscope evenings remind us that Mansfield can be a place where hard conversations happen with respect and curiosity,” Allred said.
