MANSFIELD: To John Poth, farming was not just a business….it was a way of life. Farming was in his blood, passed from generation to generation. Hardworking, dedicated, and a loving family man, John passed away Friday evening April 18, 2025 in OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following a valiant battle with cancer.
The son of a farmer, John was born January 2, 1962, in Ashland to Franklin and Patricia (Hoover) Poth.
John loved the smell of dirt in his hands and connecting with his land. It’s where he felt the most peace in life. For decades, John worked the land as a crop farmer, and also farmed cattle and hogs. He was an integral part of connecting the Adario farm communities. John’s collections included tractors, equipment, and pretty much anything that he could use on his farm. He also supplemented his time as a truck driver, most notably for W.H. Fay, Inc. and for a short time, managed a trucking business with his father.
It was on November 16, 2007 that John married Tina McPhern. The two were high school classmates who rekindled a friendship and undeniable love. John and Tina were perfect for each other.
He is survived by his wife Tina (McPhern) Poth of Mansfield; son Dakota J. Poth of Ashland; siblings Elaine Poth Shultz (Dave Shultz) of Greenwich; Juanita Poth of Shiloh; Lou Ann Poth Oswalt (Neil Kadey) Lucas, Julie Poth (Tamie Naumann) of North Carolina; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Franklin Poth Jr., and father-in-law and mother-in-law Jim (Phyllis) McPhern; and his loving dog Marshmallow Poth
The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is honored to assist John’s family with compassionate cremation.
Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Richland County Humane Society, 3025 Park Avenue West, Ontario, Ohio 44906.
