MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Township trustees approved Road Superintendent Larry Weirich’s request this week to install three cameras at the township’s salt shed, garage parking and gas pumps.

Schmidt Security Pro gave Weirich a quote of about $3,660 for the three cameras.

“We already have a relationship with Schmidt through the fire department for their camera system,” the road superintendent said at Monday night’s meeting.

Weirich also reported the Beal Road guardrail is complete.

Additionally, he suggested trustees look into a resolution requiring companies or contractors to submit plans to the township if they are planning work in the township’s right-of-ways.

“Right now, they can just show up without us knowing anything about it,” Weirich said. “This would allow the township to enforce them to use proper signage and flag men.

“I don’t think there has to be a cost associated with it, we could just sign off on it and have instructions on if they dig up our road, how we want it put back.”

Weirich said the Village of Bellville requires something similar. Trustee Dan Fletcher said he will work with Weirich on drafting a resolution soon.

In other road news, trustee Tom Craft said he and Weirich submitted an application for Ohio Public Works Commission grant dollars for a culvert replacement at Lincoln Terrace Drive.

Trustees approved a proposal from Shaffer, Johnson, Lichtenwalter & Associates Inc. of Mansfield to design the replacement.

Estimates for design services are $34,650. According to the proposed project schedule, the engineering consultant would submit design plans to the county engineer in April and hope to have plans reviewed and completed in June. Trustees would then put the project out for bid in the summer.

Trustees also moved to vacate two properties in the township — Ram Road, located near Marianna Drive, and an unnamed alley between Illinois and Bahl avenues that’s about 16 feet wide and 107 feet deep.

“Ram Road has stayed in a condition of grass and trees for 50-plus years,” Craft said. “It’s an unopened road and the adjoining property owners have maintained care for the property.”

Richland County commissioners will review the township’s intentions to vacate the properties.

Finally, Fire Chief Ken Justus said the 2024 fire department annual report is completed and available to view at Fire Department Station 1. He also said he plans to upload a PDF of the report to the township’s website.

Justus said he is working with Weirich on a solution to the rainwater and mud pools that appear in Station 1’s back parking lot from fall to spring. Additionally, Justus said he wants to repair the road apron near Station 1 on Expressview Drive.
