SHELBY — (UPDATED) The Shelby Country Club has a rich history.

It was founded in 1928 with only the front nine holes constructed. In the 1940s the owners built a restaurant and in 1967 the next nine holes were completed. When Angela Phillips’ father was the principal shareholder in 2007, the country club of 158 acres was struggling to survive.

But in January 2014, Angela decided to purchase the property bent on improving the grounds. Since her ownership of Shelby’s beloved country club, it has resurrected the restaurant (dubbed it the 1928 Grill) and spruced up the grounds.

To celebrate on Friday, General Manager Brad Ruminski hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a Richland Area Chamber of Commerce After Hours party in the pavilion with the Back on Earth Band.

Shelby Mayor Steve Schag was encouraged to be part of the ceremony.

“May I say on behalf of all residents in Richland County … we say thank you again and God bless the Phillips family for the renaissance of a location with such a rich heritage where families and friends can enjoy a delightful combination of the great outdoors, comfortable accommodations and delicious food,” Schag said.

The sun beat hard Friday, but Ruminski’s eyes squinted because he was excited for what was to come for the country club.

“If people want that country club feel, this is the place,” Ruminski said minutes after cutting the ribbon. “We used to be known for our invitational. It was the top four players at every club in the area and they would come play. We’re going to start that again with an event on October 10.”

Rates for a day of golf at the Shelby Country Club start at $30 for 18 holes with a golf cart on any week day. Prices increase by $5 on the weekends. Senior citizens can golf for $27.
