MANSFIELD — The Ohio State University at Mansfield’s theatre season starts with a free outdoor event for one night only to celebrate the 250th birthday of Johnny Appleseed.

  • Date and Time: Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m.
  • Location: Grant & Mary Milliron Research Wetlands and Classroom at The Ohio State University at Mansfield.

The Ohio State University at Mansfield is pleased to announce the upcoming Chautauqua-style program Meet Johnny Appleseed! with veteran performer Hank Fincken.

This program is the result of a community collaboration between Ohio State Mansfield Theatre, The Mansfield Richland County Public Library, and the Children’s Theater Foundation.

Actor Hank Fincken will be portraying the beloved American who was born on Sept. 26, 1774. Meet Johnny Appleseed! will be presented at the Grant & Mary Milliron Research Wetlands and Classroom behind Reidl Hall at Ohio State Mansfield on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. (Rain location will be the Conard Recital Hall a few feet away inside Riedl Hall.)

Mary Frankenfield, Deputy Director at MRCPL, expressed her excitement for the project.

“We are delighted to once again join forces with our esteemed community partners, Ohio State Mansfield Theatre and the Children’s Theater Foundation, to present a captivating and educational program in the university’s scenic outdoor classroom,” she said.

“Celebrating the 250th birthday of Johnny Appleseed, a key figure in Ohio’s and Mansfield’s history, this event honors his enduring legacy and brings his story to life in a meaningful way for all ages. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with our community.”

Joseph Fahey, Director of the Campus Theatre Program, added that this type of programming would not be possible without the support of the Friends of the Theatre and eager community partners like the library and the Children’s Theatre Foundation.

Close-in, same-level parking is available near the outdoor classroom space, and no tickets are needed for this free event.

Seating is available, but the public is also welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs and picnic-style food and drink.

Indoor restrooms are available nearby.  If you have questions, please contact mansfieldtheatre@osu.edu or 419 755-4045.
