MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Division of Police formally congratulates Sgt. Stephen Brane for his recent graduation from the Law Enforcement Foundation’s Supervisor Training and Education Program (STEP) on May 22.

Sgt. Brane was one of 35 students attending the 31st session of the program.

“As Chief, Leadership development is something I want to focus more on,” said Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann. “It is my intent to continue the process of sending current and future supervisors to the STEP training for leader development.

“My command staff and I want to congratulate Sergeant Brane for his accomplishment and look forward to watching his continual growth.”

STEP is designed to develop newly promoted officers, or about-to-be promoted officers, into highly effective first-line supervisors with the competency skills necessary to lead and supervise in a high-performance organization.

The current STEP curriculum is comprised of 21 modules including:

The transition to supervisor, leadership strategies, creating an ethical environment, developing subordinates, mentoring, dealing with problematic employees, effective listening and speaking, improved written communication, administrative skills, performance management, conflict resolution management, critical incident management through tabletop exercise, supervisory response to a line of duty shooting and patrol operations, supervisory response to vehicle and foot pursuits, supervisory response to domestic violence calls, media relations, risk management, practical case studies, team presentations, panel presentations on contemporary issues, and a First-Line Supervisor 360 assessment.

Since its beginning in 2004, 945 Ohio law enforcement first-line supervisors have attended STEP.

The Law Enforcement Foundation, in cooperation with the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, sponsors the Supervisor Training and Education Program.

The Law Enforcement Foundation exists to develop working partnerships for the common concerns of business and police executives to foster the values of good citizenship; enhance the prospects of secure communities and brighten the future through constructive social change within each Ohio community.

STEP was developed to provide law enforcement first-line supervisors with innovative and in-depth educational opportunities.
