SHELBY — Mallary Gundrum returned from injury and made history.
Shelby’s senior shortstop was selected the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year after missing her entire junior season with a knee injury. She is the Whippets’ first POY since Shelby joined the MOAC in 2019.
Gundrum missed her junior campaign after suffering a knee injury that required surgery. She returned with a vengeance this spring, batting a league-leading .549 with seven home runs and 50 runs batted in as Shelby (20-6, 13-1) won a share of the MOAC championship.
Shelby teammate Kendall Parsons joined Gundrum on the All-MOAC first team, along with Clear Fork’s Katrina Rogers and Melodie Blubaugh, Galion’s CeCe Campbell and Ontario’s Trista Jewell and Edie Howard.
Other first-team picks included Marion Harding’s Kameron Biederman, Pleasant’s Katie Jordan and River Valley’s Elaina Wooten and Samantha Woods.
Clear Fork’s Renee Anders and Macy Ousley were among the second-team selections, along with Shelby’s Lexi Booker and Natalie Kennard, Ontario’s Autumn Taylor and Olivia Kreger and Galion’s Madelyn Schieber. Other second-teamers were Highland’s Kate Clements, Marion Harding’s Raina Smith, Pleasant’s Hannah Miller and River Valley’s Delaney Myers and Bentley Auld.
The honorable-mention picks were Clear Fork’s Miley Shafer, Galion’s Madison Beck, Highland’s Madilynn Stuckman, Marion Harding’s Destiny Brown, Ontario’s Brinlee Kreger, Pleasant’s Faith Staley, River Valley’s Addison Braun and Shelby’s Kennedy Studer.
Clear Fork’s Chris Clapper was selected the MOAC Coach of the Year. The Colts shared the MOAC title with Shelby.
