MANSFIELD, Ohio — Spitzer Motor Speedway is on track for an eventful season in 2016.
The schedule, slated to run from May through September (tentatively), features Friday night biweekly shows for $5 and special events on varying Saturdays and Sundays for $15. Children 15 and younger can get in free for all events.
“We’re trying to make it as family affordable as we can,” said Mike Yunker, Full Throttle Racing Promotions president.
Yunker predicts that the Friday night shows will be the “mainstay of the track.”
“Even though we have these big race teams coming in for the six or seven big events, every other Friday night we have our local racers. It’s going to be guys from Columbus, probably three or four counties wide. It’s some of the best racing there is, he said.
“It reminds me of old style NASCAR racing–everybody had their own car and they built it their own way and whoever built the best ones won. And that’s kind of what this Friday night racing is with the compact cars.”
The Friday shows will feature front-wheel-drive stocks, outlaw mini stocks and mini trucks.
In addition to the race schedule there are also going to be three sanctioned bull riding events by Southern Extreme Bull Riding Association.
Yunker said he’s been involved with bull riding for many years, having ridden professionally for 10 years and been a part of various shows throughout the area.
“That’s another very good spectator sport,” he said.
About the variety of entertainment, Yunker said, “We wanted to create more excitement,” adding, “I think down the road there are even more things that we’re looking at.”
Yunker said there will be meet-and-greets with the racers and bull-riders, along with music played by DJs and bands, “so people are getting a little bit more for their money,” he said.
Yunker said Full Throttle Racing Promotions is looking forward to the upcoming season and building upon the excitement from last year when the track reopened after a five-year hiatus.
“We’re hoping to move forward and turn it back into a really nice deal for the city, the county and this area,” he said. “It can bring in a lot of people to this area and that’s what we’re hoping for.”
