MADISON TOWNSHIP — Taylor Huff has played with some prolific goal-scorers during her four year varsity career, but none of them brings as much to the table as Nevaeh Lewis.

Madison’s ultra-speedy freshman is in a class of her own.

The Rams (17-0-3) won their fourth consecutive district championship over the weekend thanks in no small part to Lewis, a 5-foot-4 dynamo. She scored three goals in a district semifinal win over Vermilion then added two more goals in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Richland County rival and fellow Division II heavyweight Ontario.

“She’s faster than anyone I’ve played with,” said Huff, a three-time All-American and University of Tennessee recruit, after a 9-0 win over Vermilion in the district semifinals. “You get people who can finish but they finish … not at a high percentage. Nevaeh really finishes well.

“She can place the ball and she really knows how to do it. That’s a huge difference.”

Lewis was back at it again in the district championship match against the Warriors. She scored twice off Huff assists as Huff broke the state’s career assists record.

“She’s just so fast and they play a flat back four (defensive alignment),” Huff said. “Just playing it to her over the top and they can’t catch her. Nobody can catch her.

“I’ve never met someone faster than her.”

Lewis’ career got off to a sensational start. She scored three goals in a 5-0 win at Clear Fork in late August and scored a pair of goals in a 3-0 win over Sylvania Northview on Sept. 12. Two weeks later, she injured her left ankle in the first half of a 6-1 win over Lexington.

She sat out the next two matches and played sparingly in a 9-0 win over Mount Vernon on Oct. 8 before scoring both goals in a 2-0 win at Mentor Lake Catholic two days later. She re-injured her left ankle in the second half of the match and sat out the final two matches of the regular season and both sectional matches before returning against Vermilion.

Lewis never missed a beat.

“She’s a freak. She is an X factor any time she’s in the game,” Madison coach Zac Huff said. “It obviously showed today.

“In the first half she struggled getting around the girls. In the second half we put Taylor up there to play her balls. Those two are a pretty big threat.”

The reigning Division II Player of the Year, Huff has 28 goals and 24 assists on the season. Lewis has been the principal beneficiary of Huff’s masterful passing, scoring 16 goals in 14 matches — including the goal that gave Huff the state’s career assists record in the first half Saturday against Ontario.

“She can play me the ball through the middle like nobody else can,” Lewis said. “She can dribble through anybody to get it up to me.”

Lewis sat out the regular season meeting between Madison and Ontario. That match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Rams and Warriors have met in the district final each of the past four years. Madison has won all four meetings.

“This was my first time and I didn’t know what it felt like,” Lewis said. “Now I know what it feels like (to win a district championship).”

The Rams will play at Toledo Central Catholic in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Fighting Irish advanced with a 1-0 win over Oak Harbor on Saturday.

“It feels great to advance,” Zac Huff said. “It’s one game at a time now.”
