MANSFIELD, Ohio – High winds caused a tree to fall onto a house at the corner of Park Ave. East and Vernon Road at approximately 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Greg Reed, who lives at the 1417 Park Ave. East home in Madison Township, said no one was injured.
He said he was upstairs when the tree fell and, at first, didn’t know what happened.
“I was laying down watching TV, and next I hear a big crash,” he said. “I didn’t know if a plane had hit it or whatever – it just shook the whole house.
“I came downstairs and looked out the window and saw that the tree fell.”
The fall caused damage to the house and the gas meter.
“We came outside to take pictures of it and found out the gas meter was broke off, so we called 911 and they were here within five to seven minutes,” Reed said.
The home is owned by Reed’s step-father, Larry Bishop, who has lived there since 1972.
State Farm Agent Chad Kingery, who has an office at 799 Ashland Rd., was at the scene talking with Reed and inspecting the damage.
“Certainly when you have high winds like this, there’s always a risk of trees coming down,” he said. “But in this case, we’re just really happy our customers and everyone inside is safe. That’s the most important thing.”
A high wind warning was issued for Thursday throughout north central Ohio, according to the National Weather Service.
Several trees came down and another Madison Township home was damaged because of high wind Thursday.
Southwest winds were projected between 45 and 60 mph. Advisories and warnings are in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service also reports that gusty winds are expected again Friday.
